Privacy Policy

In short: Simple Notes does not collect personal data. There is no sign-in, no advertising, no analytics and no server of our own. Your notes live on your device and – if you use iCloud – in your own iCloud account with Apple. We have no access to them.

2. The Simple Notes app

Storing your notes

All content – text, checklists, images, videos, drawings, boards, notebooks, imported PDFs, categories and reminders – is stored locally on your device. If your device is signed in to iCloud, it is also stored in the private database of your own iCloud account via Apple’s CloudKit, so it stays in sync across your devices. Apple provides this service; Apple’s privacy policy applies. We as the developer can neither view nor access this data.

Sharing notes

If you actively share a note, the shared content is made available via iCloud to the people you invite. Invitations and participants are managed through Apple’s sharing feature.

Microphone, speech recognition and voice assistant

Voice mode uses the microphone only while it is open. Speech is converted to text on your device using Apple’s speech recognition. Organizing your dictation, the assistant’s answers and “Revise” also run on your device with Apple Intelligence. Answers are read aloud with your device’s voices. Recordings are not stored and not sent to us.

Optional cloud AI

By default, voice mode runs entirely on your device. Only if you turn on cloud AI in the settings, choose a provider and enter your own API key, your spoken requests (as text) and the content of the note concerned are sent to that provider to generate a reply. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time by turning it off. Your keys are stored only in your device’s keychain. We do not receive this data.

Available providers – each with its own privacy policy, some processing data outside the EU (especially in the USA):

  • Anthropic PBC, USA (Claude) – privacy
  • OpenAI, L.L.C., USA (ChatGPT) – privacy
  • Google LLC, USA (Gemini) – privacy
  • Mistral AI SAS, France – privacy
  • X.AI LLC, USA (Grok) – privacy
  • DeepSeek, China – privacy
  • Groq, Inc., USA – privacy
  • OpenRouter, Inc., USA (forwards to the chosen model) – privacy
  • a server you run yourself (e.g. Ollama or LM Studio) – then data only goes to that server.

What each provider stores and whether it uses data for training depends on its terms and your account there.

Handwriting and PDFs

Handwriting recognition, handwriting beautification and imported PDFs are processed exclusively on your device.

Camera and photos

The camera and photo library are only used when you add a photo or video to a note yourself. Only the items you select are imported.

Notifications and Live Activity

Reminders are scheduled as local notifications on your device. The voice mode display in the Dynamic Island is a local Live Activity. Nothing is sent to us.

No analytics, no ads

Simple Notes contains no analytics or tracking tools, no advertising and no third-party software that collects data about you.

3. This website

Hosting

This website is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA (Cloudflare Pages). When you visit, Cloudflare processes technically necessary data such as your IP address, date and time, the page requested and information about your browser and operating system to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in secure and stable operation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework; standard contractual clauses apply as well. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

No cookies, no trackers

This website sets no cookies, uses no analytics and loads no third-party content. Fonts and images are served directly from this website.

Contact by email

If you email us, we use your message and email address only to answer your request (Art. 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR) and delete it once it is resolved, unless legal retention periods apply.

4. Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure and restriction of processing, to data portability and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can withdraw consent at any time. Contact simplenotes@alpenwall.de.

You can delete your notes in the app at any time; manage iCloud data in your device settings under “Apple Account → iCloud”.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority, for example the Bavarian Data Protection Authority (BayLDA), Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach, Germany.

5. Changes

We update this policy when the app or the website changes. The version published here applies.
